Pastor Karl
Pastor Karl loves spending time with the kids at the MDO and preschool because they are a constant reminder of God's goodness and grace. Having been a pastor for 13 years, and dedicated youth volunteer for years before that, he knows firsthand the struggles and blessings of being a kid in church. "Having two kids of my own now, I feel for parents navigating childcare, education, and faith. I am thankful our program is a real solution to meet the needs of our community."
Cindy Heinlein, Director
Cindy has worked as a teacher at Southminster for 27 years. She started when her 2-year-old began attending. Her oldest child had just “graduated” from Southminster two years prior. She later moved from teacher to director of the program and oversaw the teachers, programming budget and field trips. The program has blossomed from two classes to three. The program now offers a "stay and play" option to give parents more time to work, run their errands or have lunch with a friend. Cindy is proud this program is faith based and proudly prepares its graduates for success in kindergarten.

Andrea Beck, Teacher
Andrea has been in education for 18 years. She loves to introduce the classroom and learning to her students. Watching them grow physically and educationally is always a thrill. Every class has a uniqueness and the journey through the year is exciting. Andrea is a wife, mother and now a grandmother!
Melanie MacKeane, Teacher
I grew up in and around Crestwood and was married at Southminster Presbyterian Church. I started teaching when my youngest was only 3, but now my kids are grown and their kids are now enrolled! I love teaching the children and seeing them learn and retain so much. It is more than just academics; helping them develop good behaviors and values is a blessing. I understand that families all face hardships and grief at times. But this place, and the children in it, are a constant reminder of God’s love for us. I am thankful for the opportunity to work with these people every day.

Stephenia Smith, Teacher
Growing up just blocks from the church she has always been involved in various aspects of Southminster’s many ministries over the years. As the newest addition to the MDO staff, she brings a can-do attitude and warm smile to the program. She loves getting to know the kids and helping them find their place in this world by encouraging them with their projects, crafts and games. Her own knowledge of the history of the church and the neighborhood makes for a great and fun discussion. She can often find a solution to any situation and she does it with a smile.

Frequently Asked Questions
Have any additional questions about Southminster? Check out the colorful boxes below to discover some of the most common ones.
What is a typical day of preschool like for the kids?
Children are dropped off at the rear entrance of Southminster Church, which serves as the main entry for the Mother’s Day Out and Preschool programs. Cindy, the Director, greets families each morning. After placing backpacks in cubbies, children get settled and begin with playtime. Next, they enjoy playground or gym time with other classes, often including a group song or game. Classroom lessons then focus on early learning concepts such as letters, colors, or seasons, paired with a hands-on activity or craft. Children have another opportunity for free play or outdoor time before eating lunch in the classroom. After cleanup, it’s time for pickup—or for those enrolled in “Stay and Play,” an additional session of group free play.
How do you support children with first-time jitters?
Children are welcome to visit Southminster Preschool for a tour during off-hours before starting, giving families the chance to see the classrooms and meet Cindy, the Director. Kids are encouraged to bring a favorite stuffed animal or blanket to help them feel comfortable and secure. Participation is never forced. Nervous children are free to “just watch” until they feel ready, which often happens quickly once they see classmates enjoying the fun activities.
How do you talk with parents about a kid’s progress?
Preschool parents at Southminster Preschool receive regular report cards highlighting student progress and developmental milestones. Younger Mother’s Day Out (MDO) children do not receive formal report cards, but teachers share updates on growth and milestones with parents during daily pickup and drop-off. For any significant concerns—whether behavioral or developmental—our teachers communicate directly with families to create a supportive action plan tailored to each child’s needs.
How do you incorporate faith into the curriculum?
While there is no strict dogmatic component to classroom activities at Southminster Preschool, children are introduced to shared Christian values such as “we love because Jesus first loved us,” “we forgive others because we have been forgiven,” and “God created all things and loves the world and everyone in it.” Each week, Pastor Karl leads a Bible story using a Children’s Bible and guides an interactive discussion with the kids about its meaning. These lessons are designed to make the Bible accessible while helping children understand that faith in Jesus can be part of a holistic, healthy worldview.
What kinds of fun activities are available to children?
Every classroom at Southminster Preschool is equipped with toys, games, art supplies, tables, and chairs to support creative learning and play. The gym features balls, ride-on trikes and cars, and a safe indoor playset for active fun. Throughout the year, children enjoy exciting field trips and special guest visitors that enrich their learning experience. Families are also invited to evening events during the year, giving parents and kids opportunities to connect, celebrate, and enjoy time together.
